Lessons for Black History Month

Famous African-Americans for Animals

Objective
To learn about influential African-Americans who are making history for animals and to recognize and appreciate the contributions that they have provided to our society and to the animal rights movement

Activities
Students will be able to identify at least four African-Americans who are working to help animals.

Print out the information below about influential African-Americans who are helping animals. Ask students to get into groups of three or four, and give each group information about one or more of the influential African-Americans. The groups should use the Internet (if possible) to do additional research and then put together a creative three-minute presentation about their assigned individual. The presentations can be in the form of a poem, song, mini play, or in any other imaginative format. Each presentation should include information about the celebrity’s great achievements and what he or she has done to help animals.
