Lessons for Black History Month

Activity Ideas

Now that your students have learned about these influential African-Americans, help them follow in their footsteps with one or more of the following activities:
    1. Ask students to encourage KFC to improve its treatment of chickens by writing letters to the company (either individually or as a class) or making drawings to send to KFC. Click here for child-appropriate information on KFC.
    2. Help students enter PETA’s KFC poster contest. For more information, visit PETAKids.com.
    3. Make some chicken-free nuggets (available in the freezer section of most grocery stores, health-food stores, and co-ops), and bring them in for your students to try. Talk about other vegetarian options and why eating them helps animals and the environment and improves human health.
    4. Teach chicken appreciation. Have your students read and discuss the comic A Chicken’s Life. Order free copies from TeachKind.
Thank you for teaching your students to have compassion for animals. Please remember to send us your feedback on this lesson.
