On January 19, we celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His strong beliefs in racial equality and nonviolence helped mobilize Americans to challenge and change the injustices of segregation. In honor of Dr. King, this month's TeachKind bulletin uses hands-on activities to teach students citizenship skills. These are the skills that people need in order to be responsible, informed citizens who are able to influence decision makers-as the courageous people involved in the civil rights movement did-to make the world a better place.
This lesson plan is suitable for all ages, as we have provided guidelines on how to make the activities age-appropriate, where necessary. It is broken into four parts that are designed to be completed in the following order:
- Citizenship Skills Introduction
- The Movement of Our Times: Animal Protection
- The Informed Citizen
- Influencing Our World
Thank you for using the lesson plan, and please, be sure to provide feedback so that we can improve and continue to serve you and your students.
