The Mind and Behavior of a Turkey

Throughout history, we have justified the cruel treatment of others by belittling the abilities and intelligence of the oppressed. Once we take a closer look at the plight of the turkey in America today, we see the same has taken place toward them. People believe that turkeys are stupid and therefore have no emotional capacity. This misunderstanding surrounding turkeys that presumes a lack of intelligence in the birds is caused by our own lack of understanding of them. The first step in helping students understand and empathize with turkeys is to give them accurate information to think critically about and base sound decisions on.

Activities and Discussion Topics
  • Watch "Stimulus Response" (can be ordered for free through PETA) and discuss the "experiments" with the chickens. Ask the students if they believe that the results would be the same with turkeys. Then discuss whether students' attitudes toward turkeys has changed as a result of viewing this film.
