Description: This colorful and engaging comic
book tells the story of Sunshine, a rat who was rescued from
a research lab and now lives with her human companion, Sam.
Through the comic, students learn fascinating facts about
rats and are introduced in an age-appropriate way to the ethical
issues surrounding the use of animals in research.
Suggested Uses: Distribute copies to students
to encourage reading, or if your students are too young to
read, read the story aloud while students follow along. Librarians
can provide copies at the check-out desk or give them out
as awards in reading programs. Science teachers can use the
comic to supplement lessons on animal behavior or ethical
discussions about the use of animals for research. Social
studies teachers and humane educators may want to use the
comic to discuss animal research and the proper care of animals.
Another great free comic is “An
Elephant’s Life” and “A Chicken's Life”
